BSC Newsletter - Summer 2018 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the Summer 2018 Bogong Ski Club Newsletter.

Members are reminded that junior members can now join the club as full members from when they turn 18 years of age and before they turn 21 years of age. It is up to members to ensure junior members of the family maintain their membership for five consecutive years preceding their application to qualify to become a full member of the club. Once turning 21 years of age children of full members are no longer eligible to stay at Bogong Ski Club as a junior member.

Member News

Carlee Smith wife of Phillip Smith and Tshering Smith wife of David Smith are welcomed as new members of the club being spouses of existing members. Robert O’Brien, William O’Brien and Daniel Hill are welcomed as a new member of the club qualifying for membership from our junior member ranks.

It is with regret that we acknowledge the resignation of Craig and Wendy Saywell members of the club who have tendered their resignations.

The club was saddened by the passing of life member and long standing committee member of the club George Waite. We offer our condolences to Barbara, Michelle and family.

Annual General meeting

The Annual General Meeting is to be conducted at 2.00pm on Saturday 24 March 2018 at The Vincent, 107-111 Victoria Avenue, Albert Park. The Vincent has an a la carte restaurant for members who may want lunch before the meeting.

A notice for the AGM is included at the end of this newsletter. It includes the agenda for the meeting.

At the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting members are invited to stay for refreshments and canapés and catch up with fellow members.

Booking System

The online booking system is continuing to be refined with some of the problems that occurred last year now being eliminated from the system.

Bookings for each year from 31st March to the day prior to Queens Birthday weekend of the following year will open at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which for 2018 is on 24 March.

Financial Full Members wishing to make bookings have priority of bookings for three weeks after the AGM, which for 2018 is 14 April.

A member can make multiple bookings of beds in the same room and make the appropriate payment. Members cannot make bookings for beds in different rooms in the same period and then reallocate these bookings to different members or limited members. A name needs to be put against each individual booking.

From 15 April to 1 May members plus accompanying Limited Members can make bookings.

Bookings from returning Limited Members not accompanied by a member can be made from 1st May.

New Limited Members and Limited Members who did not use the lodge in the previous year are required to complete a Limited Member Application Form and return with their booking form and payment. This is available from the Secretary.

Bookings without payment will be held for SEVEN DAYS ONLY and must be paid within that time. If payment does not occur the booking WILL BE CANCELLED. The onus is on the person making the booking to expedite the booking NOT the Booking Officer.

Any alteration to bookings has to be done through the Booking Officer. The Booking Officer will maintain a wait list for all types of bookings and where a booking is not paid for or contravenes the booking rules the booking officer is able to re-allocate that room to a person(s) on the wait list.

Anzac Day Dawn Service 25 April

An Anzac Day Dawn Service is to be held once again at the Eagle Rock under the Eagle Chair on the Falls Creek to Mt McKay Road. A free shuttle service is available from the village for the service.

New Eagle Chair

After months of preparation and planning, installation of Falls Creek’s new Eagle Chair project has commenced.

2017 saw the end of an era, with the ski resort’s former Eagle Chair turning for the last time on 8th October after 36 years of operation.

A Falls Creek spokesperson advised “now it's time to get excited as the installation of our shiny new high speed quad chair happens over the summer.

“We've removed the cable, the top and bottom drive stations, and seen most of the towers taken out.”

Major maintenance items completed or planned prior to 2018 ski season include:

  • Replacement of cracked double glazed windows in the dining room, room 8 and room 9 have recently been installed.
  • A design for a bike rack and lockable storage area along part of the north wall has been sought.
  • Painting the outside of the lodge has started and had to await the completion of the installation of new windows.
  • Replacement of the toilet bowl in room 9.

5.2 Amendment to Clause 5.d

When Clause 5d was first amended to enable a partner living in a de facto relationship with a full member to join the club as a full member initial draft drafts required that the de facto relationship had to exist for 2 years prior to the partner being eligible to join the club as a full member. This was amongst a number of other clauses from the Family Law Act 1975 which were spelt out in full.

In the final draft of Rule 5d which was introduced the individual clauses which were originally spelt out were simplified by direct reference Clause 4AA of the Family Law Act 1975. This had the effect of inadvertently removing the two year qualification required for the relationship to exist prior to being able to apply for full membership as the two year qualification is referred to elsewhere in the Act.

The Committee has reviewed the position carefully and resolved that the requirement for a relationship to exist for two years prior to a partner being eligible to apply for full membership should be an express  requirement in keeping with the original intention of the Rule. The proposed Rule change as underlined below gives effect to this eligibility requirement for membership.

5d.         By marriage to, or by living in a de facto relationship as a couple as defined by the Family Law Act 1975 Section 4AA for a minimum duration of two years (in which time the couple is to have lived in a common residence) with, a full member of the club the spouse or partner of the full member is eligible to apply for full membership. If admitted to full membership the spouse or partner shall pay a joining fee of $1,000 (+GST) and purchase additional debentures to comply with rule 13 b.  For the purposes of these Rules, a de facto relationship excludes a second de facto relationship which might exist at the same time as the member remains married to, or in a de facto relationship with, another person who is also a current member of the Club.

The committee proposes a Special Resolution to be voted on at the AGM in accordance with Rule 89 to amend Rule 5d as set out above.
