BSC Newsletter - Summer 2013-2014 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the first Bogong Ski Club Newsletter for 2014. This newsletter comes to you after prolonged periods of very hot weather in Victoria. Whilst the severity and duration of the hot weather has caused heightened levels of fire risk the alpine areas have thankfully been spared any major fire events so far this fire season.

Member News

It is with sadness that I have to inform members that one of our life members Steph Martin passed away in late 2013. Steph was a long time Kiewa Valley resident firstly in Tawonga South and then when she met and married Eric Martin. They settled in Mount Beauty and once the family was growing joined Bogong Ski Club as a family activity. Steph soon became a member of the club committee and helped to steer the club through major lodge reconstruction and development. Steph and Eric also were instrumental in fostering club races and supporting the club’s involvement in NEDSA. In 1969 she was awarded a life membership in recognition of her many years of commitment.

Sadly we also advise that Jim Petty passed away in February 2014. Jim was a member for many years, served on the committee and will be remembered for his visits with Glen and family for many years. Their daughters Susan Hall and Sandra Petty have continued to actively contribute to the club.

  • Major maintenance items that have already commenced or are likely to commence in the next month are the painting of rooms 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
  • Replacement and refitting of the exhaust fan drawing cold air into the cool room during winter. The existing fan has ceased to operate and the new fan has to be mounted differently to the fan which previously serviced the area.
  • Replacement of the floor coverings in the ski room, drying room and entrance area are currently being investigated. The rooms may need to be re-levelled to provide better drainage should different floor coverings be used. This may require this work to be delayed until 2014/2015.
  • Replacement of the showers in room 12 and 13 with a new solid bases to complete the replacement of all shower cubicles on level 5. The existing moulded shower cubicles had been incorrectly installed in the lodge rebuild in 1993 resulting in a number of leaks to the levels below.
  • Installation of a new window and frame in the western end of the lounge room. The new window frame incorporates a thermal barrier to avoid the condensation problems that have existed with the existing window frame.
  • Consultation is currently occurring with Falls Creek Resort Management about the level of fill that has been placed along part of the western wall of the lodge during road works and the installation of reticulated gas supplies. The club has been advised to have been drainage installed in this area.

Falls to Hotham Alpine crossing officially opened

In early summer Benalla MP Bill Sykes, Park’s Victoria’s Andrew Fairley, Andrew Marshall and Falls Creek Resort Management CEO David Herman met to officially launch the Falls to Hotham Alpine crossing. Spanning the Bogong High Plains to join two of Victoria’s largest alpine resorts, the crossing has been an attraction drawing visitors to the High Country for years.

The upgrade to the 37km crossing now includes improved signage and track development plus new camping platforms at Dibbins and Cope Huts to maintain the fragile vegetation in the area.

New MTB downhill trail opens

After much public participation, Falls Creek Resort Management has announced the opening of the resorts first downhill Mountain Bike Trail.

Located in the Summit area the trail is an intermediate decent through the popular “International” ski area. With the start and finish respectively at the top and bottom of the Summit Chairlift, this trail is purpose built for riders to take advantage of Falls Creek’s Summer chairlift operation.

Falls Creek Mountain Raid

Falls Creek played host to the inaugural Falls Creek Mountain Raid over the weekend of 15 and 16 February. The weekend comprised both adventure racing and running events. The Adventure Race comprised a two day, two stage race which included trail running, mountain biking and paddling on Rocky Valley Lake. The Mountain Raid Trail Run was a 14km event that went up Wombats Ramble, along the aqueduct and descended down Frying Pan Spur to Howmans Gap. The race finished with a 4.5km climb up the Packhorse Trail to the Village.

Annual General Meeting

The 2014 Annual General Meeting is to be conducted at 2.00pm on Saturday 22 March at the Anglers Tavern, 2 Raleigh Road (continuation of Maribyrnong Road) Maribyrnong.

Proposed Rule Changes

Rule changes are proposed to the Rules of Bogong Ski Club and are contained in the agenda for the 2014 Annual General Meeting. At last years Annual General Meeting Rule 5 was amended by unanimous resolution to clarify and simplify the procedure for junior members to become full members of the lodge. The introduction of this rule change into the Rules of Bogong Ski Club has been delayed because of requirements now applying under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012.

To address the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 two additional amendments are proposed to the Rules of Bogong Ski Club to include a purpose of the club into the rules and to provide for minutes of Committee Meetings and General Meetings to be available for inspection by members of the club.

At last years Annual General Meeting it was also proposed that the club rules be changed to provide Defacto partners of members an ability to join the club as full members.

Two additional rule changes are also proposed. These are to simply the process for divorced or separated married or Defacto couples to take out single membership and providing for a subscription reduction for members over 75 years of age.

2013/2014 Committee Elections

As most members of our club would appreciate three committee positions come up for election each year. This year the successful candidates for the three positions on committee were:

  • Alan Smith
  • Peter Purcell
  • Richard Jowett

The committee congratulates successful candidates and thanks Paul Bell for his nomination and service to the committee. Paul has played an integral part in the running of the club, particularly in his various roles as Vic President and Supply Officer.
