BSC Summer Newsletter

Welcome to the first Bogong Ski Club Newsletter for 2015.

Members are reminded that the rules of Bogong Ski Club have been amended to clarify and simplify the procedure for junior members to become full members of the lodge. Junior members can now join the club as full members from when they turn 18 years of age and to before they turn 21 years of age. It is up to members to ensure junior members of the family maintain their, membership to qualify to become a full member of the club.

Member News

Hugh Bear and Julia O’Brien are welcomed as new members of the club graduating to full membership from our junior ranks.

Simon and Brooke Juniper welcomed Max, born on 27 December.

Annual General meeting

The Annual General Meeting is to be conducted at 2.00pm on Saturday 28 March 2015 at Bogong Ski Club. The AGM will be followed by drinks and nibbles.

A notice is provided for the AGM that includes the agenda.

Online Booking System

The Committee is pleased to announce plans to introduce an online booking system this season, which will make viewing the current availability of bed space in the lodge "live" and easily available.  Each member will be issued with a Login ID and password.  Only members who have fully paid their annual subs will be able to book.  You will be able to book your beds(s)/room(s) and pay on-line.  All bookings, even once confirmed and paid for, are still subject to reallocation at the discretion of the Booking Officer, so as to make maximum use of the lodge's bed space.  This is an exciting development for the Club and one which we know many members have been looking forward to.  Limited members will also be able to use the system (when their bookings open) and will be also issued a login and password once subs have been paid.  More information on the new system will follow soon.

Falls Creek Long Table Lunch

On Friday March 13 2015, Falls Creek will once again play host to the Regional World's Longest Lunch, part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

The inaugural event in 2014 was a big success with guests dining against the spectacular backdrop of the banks of Rocky Valley Lake. To match (or possibly surpass) this location, the 2015 event will be hosted in the incredible grounds of Wallace’s Hut. With the lush green lawn and tranquil setting amongst the snow gums, Wallace’s is the perfect place to highlight another of Falls Creek's impressive summer aspects.

Renowned chef and local business owner, Barry Iddles (Elk at Falls Restaurant) will return once again in 2015 to bring his unique tastes to the long table for over 100 diners.

Tickets to the event are now on sale at $110 per person. This price includes a 3 course lunch plus drinks and canapés.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities.

3 Peaks Challenge

Take the challenge, ride the 235km course through Australia's most spectacular Alpine Region! The Bogong High Plains road between Falls Creek and Omeo Highway is now sealed which creates the opportunity for a 'European-Style' road cycling event. The 230km course starts and finishes at Falls Creek, circumnavigating Victoria's Alpine Region traversing Tawonga Gap, Mt Hotham, then back to Falls Creek via Omeo.

Easter 2015

Plenty of activities are on over Eastern including Hedonistic Hiking for a weekend of fun hiking combined with our signature food and wine experiences.

Anzac Day Dawn Service 25 April

An Anzac Day Dawn Service is to be held at the Eagle Rock under the Eagle Chair on the Falls Creek to Mt McKay Road.

Maintenance

Major maintenance items that have already commenced or are likely to commence in the next month are the painting of rooms 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

Replacement of the floor coverings in the ski room, drying room and entrance area are being carried out over the next two months. The drying room has to be re-levelled to provide better drainage. The vinyl flooring in a section of the kitchen and the bathroom in room 8 are also being replaced.

Repairs are being undertaken to the large stove/hotplate and oven. Replacement of the oven, hotplate and cook top is being investigated.

Replacement of the boiler and hot water system is currently being investigated as the old system has been in for at least 25 years and a number of minor problems have occurred.

The controls on a number of radiators are being replaced with new controls.

Consultation is currently occurring with Falls Creek Resort Management about the level of fill that has been placed along part of the western wall of the lodge during road works and the installation of reticulated gas supplies. The club has been advised to have been drainage installed in this area.

Safety signage is being installed at the corners of the building to warn pedestrians and those who may want to play close to the lodge that there are dangers associated with snow shedding from buildings in alpine areas.

The sound system in the lounge and children’s lounge is being replaced.

Purchase of a Defibrillator

The club is purchasing and installing a defibrillator in the lodge for use in an emergency situation. The defibrillator comes with full operating instructions and is able to be used by anyone in an emergency whether trained in first aide or not.

Guests Moving From Rooms Assigned By the Booking Officer

Members are reminded that they are to remain in the room allocated by the booking officer. Last season we had the unfortunate event where guests changed rooms without notifying the booking officer or lodge leader and when new guests arrived after midnight there allocated room was taken. These new guests ended up having to sleep on the floor in the children’s lounge.

It is a fire risk for guests to move rooms without notice as the booking list will be used to determine which rooms need to be checked when a roll call is made in the event of an emergency.

No one should move rooms without first clearing the room change with the booking officer and the lodge leader and other guests who may have booked into that room. Any agreed move must be recorded as an amendment to the room booking sheet.

Limited Members Staying in the lodge for the First Time

Limited member staying in the lodge for the first time must be accompanied by a full member or limited member of long term standing. There have been instances of new limited members staying in the lodge for the first time not knowing what the change over times were or the responsibilities to undertake duties as required. Of particular concern has been the state that some rooms have been left after they have been vacated.

Use of the Lodge by Members Not Booked Into the Lodge

The committee has received complaints about the extent of use of the lodge by members not booked into the lodge. It is well accepted that members can use the lodge on day trips or limited members who are accompanying a member can use the lodge on a day trip to the mountain. The committee has decided that it is inappropriate for members to use the lodge facilities such as the laundry and to entertain guests for evening meals when not booked into the lodge during school holidays and peak season. At other times the member needs the consent of the lodge leader to use the club facilities and to entertain outside guests.

Use of Returning Guests Storage Area

The club installed returning guest storage cupboards in the end of the sauna area in 2013. Members are reminded that this area is for storage of equipment by guests either continuing to stay at the lodge or returning later in the same season or summer.

The area is not to be used for long term storage season to season.
