BOGONG SKI CLUB

NEWSLETTER

SPRING 2015

Welcome to the BSC Spring Newsletter

Welcome to the fourth Bogong Ski Club Newsletter for 2015. Although the ski season was slow to get off the ground there were certainly good snow falls from July into August and the season at Falls Creek carried through to the closing weekend at the start of October.

Reminder of Rule Changes

The committee has requested that that I remind members to which this may apply that the rules of Bogong Ski Club have been amended to clarify and simplify the procedure for junior members to become full members of the lodge. Junior members can now join the club as full members from when they turn 18 years of age and until they turn 21 years of age. It is up to members to ensure junior members of the family maintain their membership to qualify to become a full member of the club.

Please note that to be eligible for full membership, the junior member must have 5 years of consecutive junior membership in the period immediately before they apply for full membership.  Please also note that if a junior member does not apply for full membership through this procedure they will have to apply for full membership, pay the full adult application fee and join the waiting list.  Full memberships come up rarely and so there may be a considerable waiting period before full membership can be obtained.

Please refer to Rule 5 of the BSC Rules for further information and the precise process.

Member News

T. Loder, O. Manson, S. O’Connor and A. O’Brien are welcomed as new members of the club graduating to full membership from our junior ranks.

The following members have tendered their resignations from the club, J & P Hayden and R. Kirton.

Summer Activities

So you thought your visits to Falls Creek had to include snow. Wrong there is an ever increasing range of summer activities available to the visitor to Falls Creek. Some activities are self-organised while others have varying degrees of service from the Falls Creek Resort Management.

For a full list of summer activities go to the Falls Creek Resort Management website at www.fallscreek.com.au/activities/summer

These summer activities include:

  • 7 Peaks Running
  • High Country Huts
  • Hiking
  • Packhorse Heritage Trail
  • Photography Workshop
  • Falls to Hotham crossing and pick up return
  • High Country Huts
  • Mt McKay summit
  • MTB gravity shuttle
  • Dirty dozen MTB rude
  • Water Falls
  • Trail running
  • MTB Fainter Track Tour
  • Cross Country Mountain Biking – new tracks have been opened up for a greater range of terrain
  • Road Cycling

McKayos Gravity Enduro

McKayos is Falls Creek’s newest event, a MTB gravity endure bash from the snowy slopes of Australia’s highest driveable peak to the pristine shores of Lake Guy in Bogong Village.

The event combined Snow, Dirt and Road and took riders 18km through fire trails and sealed mountain roads for a total descent of 1200m. A mass start on snow saw some chaos from the starters gun. The event was conducted on the closing weekend so if you may be interested put this in your calendar for next year.

3 Peaks Challange

The 3 Peaks Challenge is a cycling event/challenge conducted over a 235km course through Victoria’s Alpine Region in January. The course starts and finishes at Falls creek circumnavigating Victoria’s Alpine Region traversing Tawonga Gap to Bright, Mt Hotham, Omeo and back to Falls Creek. This event is getting bigger and bigger every year and the club has quite a number of bookings from members and limited members for this weekend already. Get your booking in soon to avoid disappointment.

Bookings

This year, the introduction of our new online booking system has made it a challenging one. Our booking officer would like to thank all our members for their patience and support while we bed in the new system. From all evidence, the bookings for this year have gone remarkably well, we did have some early issues, but once these were overcome, the bookings came in with the minimum of fuss. We will be talking with the program administrator to streamline a couple of problems over the summer months. Speaking of which, we already have a couple of whole lodge bookings, one in November and the other in January. The summer months are a great opportunity to bring a group up. The resort has been doing a lot of work with events on most weekends over the holiday period. The new online system is operational right through the summer months.

Locker Room and Ski Storage

For safety reasons we need to mention once again that articles are not to be stored on the top of lockers and all doors are to be securely closed. If you are having problems with the lock of closing the door, contact the club secretary to have your locker repaired.

Maintenance

Major maintenance items that have already commenced or are likely to commence in the next months are the painting of outside timber work at the lodge.

Reinstatement of drainage at the rear of the lodge. This drainage was compromised when new telephone lines were installed.

Falls Creek Resort Management has eventually agreed to remove fill that was placed against the west end of the lodge when the bitumen road was constructed to the Alpine View Apartments.

New shower heads are to be installed through the lodge as a number of the existing shower heads are giving problems as a result of normal wear and tear.

Remote start-up of the boiler is being investigated to improve energy efficiency and to avoid on mountain contacts having to be used to start up and shut down the boiler when the club is not in use.
