BSC Newsletter - Autumn 2016 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the Bogong Ski Club Autumn Newsletter. In recent months South Eastern Australia has been experiencing extremely dry weather conditions with parts being the driest for the last 50 years. We can only hope that with the easing of the El Nino weather pattern that we can look forward to wetter and cooler conditions for Victoria and our high country.

The Club Annual General meeting was conducted on 19 March at the Anglers Tavern in Maribyrnong with an attendance of 31 members. Copies of the Minutes of the AGM and reports are attached for member’s information.

Members are reminded that the rules of Bogong Ski Club have been amended to clarify and simplify the procedure for junior members to become full members of the lodge. Junior members can now join the club as full members from when they turn 18 years of age and to before they turn 21 years of age. It is up to members to ensure junior members of the family maintain their membership to qualify to become a full member of the club.

Boiler Maintenance

Some problems have occurred with the new boilers and the boiler installers have had to attend the lodge to investigate the problems, what caused the failure and why was the boiler not resettable in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Both boilers had failed at the same time meaning the club had no backup provisions. Branco Boilers has since advised that both boilers had been incorrectly set when installed and the problem has now been fixed.

Double-glaze window in Room 8

Alpine Building have fitted a new double glazed window in room 8. This window was found to be the only window in the lodge that was not double glazed.

Balcony door handles

Balcony door handles and locks have been replaced and all other public area door locks have been checked to determine if they need replacing. As handles require replacing most, if not all, replacements will be lever action handles.

Painting of outside trim on the Lodge

Our painting contractor has been very busy and the painting of outside trim on the lodge is being held over until later in the year.

Drainage and Retaining Wall at West end of Lodge and Drainage at rear of Lodge

Falls Creek Resort Management has eventually initiated some excavation of the fill against the western wall of the lodge. This is ongoing work in progress. Negotiations with Falls Creek Resort Management on this work are still ongoing and at least now there is some active dialogue between parties, although the extent of work to be undertaken and coordination of work is still to be finalised.

Replacement Shower Roses

Replacement shower roses have been purchased for all showers in the lodge and will be replaced prior to the season. As members would know many of the existing roses were worn and the only way to efficiently fix the problem was to replace the shower heads.

Cabling for WiFi Operation

Cabling rough in for security WiFi control has been installed and Brendan Bain is installing security cameras in the entrance way and boiler room at the May working bee. Ultimately this will enable remote start up and shut down of the boiler and monitoring of boiler operation to greatly improve the efficiency of operation of the heating system.

Kitchen Cupboard Doors

Repairs are being undertaken to the doors along the rear wall of the kitchen where the hinges on some doors have worn and need replacing.

2016 Ski Season

Personal preparation for the 2016 ski season should be well advanced. The early bird specials for resort entry passes and ski passes closed on 30 April.

Hero passes for the ski lifts closed much earlier, in October 2015.

Bookings for this year have progressed with a minimum of fuss under the new online booking system introduced by the club. Go online or contact the Booking Officer for any of your skiing/ holiday requirements.

A number of deficiencies in the system are still being worked through with the software provider and once these are sorted out the bookings available under the system will more closely reflect the booking rules for the club.

Working Bee

The annual working bee was conducted on 14th & 15th May in preparation for the 2016 ski season. Accommodation for members during this weekend is available free in exchange for a good days work. Please contact the Booking Officer to book accommodation should you wish to participate in the future.

New Toboggan Slope in The Bowl

To the relief of many club members and guests there will be a new toboggan area in the Village Bowl for 2016. The slope alongside the Gull Chair top station will now be reserved for tobogganing and no longer will guests have to toboggan in this area illegally.

Good Deal for Teens

Teenagers will ski and snowboard for the same price as kids this season with the age limit for a kid’s pass increased to 17 inclusive (previously under 15s).
