BSC Newsletter - Winter/Spring 2016 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the BSC Winter/Spring Newsletter

Welcome to the third Bogong Ski Club Newsletter for 2016. We did have good snow levels for this ski season with excellent snow falls from July into September and the season at Falls Creek carried through to the closing weekend at the start of October. In fact, some of the highest snow levels were about after the official close of the season.

Whilst snow falls for the season were better than in recent years the amount of lift closures from wind hold also increased plus there were more days with heavy fog and rain.

Reminder of Rule Changes

A further reminder to members to who this may apply that the rules of Bogong Ski Club have been amended to clarify and simplify the procedure for junior members to become full members of the lodge. Junior members can now join the club as full members from when they turn 18 years of age and until they turn 21 years of age. It is up to members to ensure junior members of the family maintain their, membership to qualify to become a full member of the club.

Please note that to be eligible for full membership, the junior member must have 5 years of consecutive junior membership in the period immediately before they apply for full membership.  Please also note that if a junior member does not apply for full membership through this procedure they will have to apply for full membership, pay the full adult application fee and join the waiting list.  Full memberships come up rarely and so there may be a considerable waiting period before full membership can be obtained.

Please refer to Rule 5 of the BSC Rules for further information and the precise process.

Member News

Anna Kirton and Liam Beddow are welcomed as new members of the club graduating to full membership from our junior ranks.

It is unfortunate that the following members have tendered their resignations from the club, Mel and Margaret Blachford, Michael Purcell and Steven Mitchell.

Pack Horse Heritage Trail

The Packhorse Heritage Trail is the newest addition to falls Creek’s world-class network of high country walking trails. The newly developed trail takes hikers from falls Creek Village to the Howmans Gap Alpine Centre along the old packhorse trail that early cattlemen and surveyors used to access the Bogong High Plains.

This trail has long been recalled by Falls Creek old timers but it has only been since 2003 bushfires that it has become exposed again. The trial is now a Falls Creek icon, offering first-hand insights into the devastation caused by the fires and the incredible regeneration seen since.

Bookings

There has been an improvement in the booking figures over the last few years. Over the last two years , our spring bookings have been helped by VIC and NSW school holiday now starting in late September. Still having a metre of snow through a lot of September certainly helps bookings especially those made late in the season.

Summer bookings have begun strongly with groups planning to use the lodge at various times and the Christmas-New Year period booked solidly.

Further refinements are still being made to the electronic booking system to more closely reflect the booking system that applies in the club.

Locker Room, Freezers and Ski Storage

For safety reasons we need to mention once again reminded that articles are not to be stored on the top of lockers and all doors are to be securely closed. If you are having problems with the lock of closing the door, contact the club secretary to have your locker repaired.

There have been problems with members and guests leaving food in the freezers and clothes and gear in the drying rooms and ski room. There is insufficient room in freezers for members to use the freezers for long term storage. Members are reminded that there is a returning guest storage area in the sauna area and drying rooms, ski room and the tops of lockers are not to be used for storage between visits.

Members and Guests are to put their name and period of stay on food left in freezers and in the bottom of fridges.

Maintenance

Major maintenance items that have already commenced or are likely to commence in the next months are the painting of outside timber work at the lodge.

Falls Creek Resort Management has eventually agreed to remove fill that was placed against the west end of the lodge when the bitumen road was constructed to the Alpine View Apartments. This work is to be commenced in 2017

Remote startup and shut down of the new boiler system is still progressing specifications of components being sought prior to purchase and installation.

The new boiler system worked well during the season with the boilers coping well with the backup electric hot water systems actually turned off.

Windows have to be replaced in the dining room and room 9. Some were affected by heat generated by the new BBQ and some of the vacuum seals in the older double glazed windows are failing.

With large amounts of wet snow falling during the season, some roof leaks occurred. These will be repaired where possible when all snow and moisture has gone from the room.
