BSC Newsletter - Spring 2017 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the BSC Spring Newsletter

Welcome to the fourth Bogong Ski Club Newsletter for 2017. Despite being a little slow to start we did have great snow depths for the ski season with excellent snow falls from July into September and the season at Falls Creek carried through to the closing weekend at the start of October. In fact some of the deepest snow depths were into September.

Reminder for Junior Members

A further reminder to members to who this may apply that the rules of Bogong Ski Club have been amended to clarify and simplify the procedure for junior members to become full members of the lodge. Junior members can now join the club as full members from when they turn 18 years of age and until they turn 21 years of age. It is up to members to ensure junior members of the family maintain their, membership to qualify to become a full member of the club.

Please note that to be eligible for full membership, the junior member must have 5 years of consecutive junior membership in the period immediately before they apply for full membership.  Please also note that if a junior member does not apply for full membership through this procedure they will have to apply for full membership, pay the full adult application fee and join the waiting list.  Full memberships come up rarely and so there may be a considerable waiting period before full membership can be obtained.

Please refer to Rule 5 of the BSC Rules for further information and the precise process.

Member News

It is with regret that the following members have tendered their resignations from the club, George Waite who was a Life Member of the Club, David Quigley and Tom Blachford.

Summer Activities

So you thought your visits to Falls Creek had to include snow. Wrong there is an ever increasing range of summer activities available to the visitor to Falls Creek. Some activities are self organised while others have varying degrees of service from the Falls Creek Resort Management.

For a full list of summer activities go to the Falls Creek Resort Management web site at www.fallscreek.com.au/attractions/search

Mountain Biking

Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park has arrived. 40km+ of machine-built single track winding through the serene snowgums of a brilliant alpine terrain, it is almost too good to shred. Falls Creek is the rider's mountain. All trails start and finish in the resort so matter what trail you take each descent is matched with a technical uphill to take you back to the top. Easy cruiser, fun flowing descent or all-mountain bash packed with features, we've got it.

Road Cycling

For the avid cyclist Falls Creek is simply the perfect destination.

Consider this - Falls Creek has a dedicated all-season village, complete with accredited cycle-friendly businesses, all located at least 1650m above sea level. That makes it the perfect base to get the benefits of altitude training.

It is also the pinnacle of one of North East Victoria's elite 7 Peaks Ride climbs. Head off from Mt Beauty for the 30km ascent with an average 4% grade (max 10%) through spectacular alpine wilderness.

Out of Falls Creek nearby destinations of Omeo, Anglers Rest, Bright and Mt Hotham are all within reach.

Hiking and Trail Running

Falls creek offers an extensive 45km network of on-grade running trails in and around the resort.

Falls Creek is a unique offering when it comes to alpine trail running. Combining a diverse range of trails with its beautifully appointed village and iconic tourist landmarks, Falls Creek brings together accessibility and convenience with challenging rewards for all abilities. The trails at Falls range from flat well-manicured walking and vehicle tracks to rugged and remote single tracks through extreme alpine terrain. Heritage sites like Wallace’s and Cope Huts join the spectacular features of Rocky Valley Lake, Mt McKay and Frying Pan Spur in an enviable sightseeing aspect to the trail offering. To be part of the group, run in Falls during January when the cream of elite Australian distance running come to take advantage of the cool climate and 1600m+ altitude training benefits.

Bookings

There was a marked improvement in the booking figures over September this year. This was possibly due to bookings being made after the 9 September being at the summer accommodation rate. Still having a metre of snow through to October certainly helped bookings especially those made late in the season.

Summer bookings are strong with groups planning to use the lodge at various times and the Christmas New Year period booked solidly.

Locker Room, Freezers and Ski Storage

Once again for safety reasons we need to remind members that articles are not to be stored on the top of lockers and all doors are to be securely closed. If you are having problems with the lock of closing the door, contact the club secretary to have your locker repaired.

There have been problems with members and guests leaving food in the freezers and clothes and gear in the drying rooms and ski room for longer term storage. Some articles of clothing and skis were left in the drying room and ski room for weeks on end. There is insufficient room in freezers for members to use the freezers for long term storage. Members are reminded that there is a returning guest storage area in the sauna area and drying rooms, ski room and the tops of lockers are not to be used for storage between visits.

Members and Guests are to put their name and period of stay on food left in freezers and in the bottom of fridges.

Maintenance

Major maintenance items that have already commenced or are likely to commence in the next months are the painting of outside timber work at the lodge.

Windows have to be replaced in the dining room and room 9. Some were affected by heat generated by the new BBQ and some of the vacuum in the older double glazed windows is failing.

With large amounts of wet snow falling during the season some roof leaks occurred. These will be repaired where possible when all snow and moisture has gone from the roof.

Options for the track on the curtain at the end of the lounge room are being investigated. It may be possible to install a geared track system.

Site Lease Renewal

A subcommittee has been formed to initiate the process of Site Lease renewal for BSC. The subcommittee consists of Andrew Smith, Graeme Obst, Richard Jowett, Martin Juniper and Noel Eltringham. The subcommittee have gone through the Business Application Form that is required lease renewal and will report the lease renewal process back to members at the 2018 Annual General Meeting with a view to having the lease renewal application completed in 2019.

The current lease for the BSC site expires in 2027.

Other members of the club will be coopted onto the subcommittee as required.
